Actually chisels have brand-name goods also
The best use brand name of chisels for sculpture is Kiyotsuna
next is Yoshinobu next is Nobuyosi or Konobu while I started scluputure
up to the present
I cannot chose one brand of chisels because these
chisels are really nice chisels they have same cutting quality of a chisels
and same sharpness
most important elements of cutting quality is kind of steels
According to the story that I heard
Kiyotsuna and Konobu use Aogami-No.2
These steels for use tools also called Kami(Kami or Gami is meaning the paper in Japanese)
These steels by high quality from the top
青紙スーパー
Aogami-super(Ao mean the blue in Japanese)
青紙2号
Aogami-No.2
白紙3号
Shirogami-No.3(Shiro mean the white in Japanese)
白紙2号
Shirogami-No.2
白紙1号
Shirogami-No.1
黄紙3号
Kigami-No.3(ki mean the yellow in japanese)
黄紙2号
Kigami-No.2
You may think Kigami No.2 is junk steels but
that is wrong
Because you must chose kind of steel for the right stuff in the right place
it mean some part of tools need hard steel but some part of tools need
soft steel so that can’t be said sweepingly.
Actually all chisels can be have same sharpness when you sharpning
but different of steel quality is how long sustaining sharpness
for example craft man never use cheep chisels for students or beginner
because these chisels cannot hold sharpness edge these chisels will be doesnt sharp soon
These chisels was introduced in this chapter is
good for carving soft woods like a Hinoki(Japanese cypress)
Actually carve soft woods need sharp edge
when you use sharp chisels surface of finished goes shining
but if you use doesnt sharp chisels it couldnt shining
Thats why beautiful surface of finished need sharp chisels
It mean chisels have to hold sharpness long time also
if chisels couldnt hold sharpness long time you have to sharpning frequently
By the way I think that you should harden steel if you sculpture hard wood,
When you carve harden wood you need harden steel for that
but It doesnt hold sharpness. So harden steel blade should make the blade edge an obtuse angle
I think if I use that chisel I become able to carve a hard tree easily
but That takes labor.
So I always use chisels of everyday I using and these chisels has lost its edge
I make the blade edge an obtuse angle
But I can not afford to order such special chisels now
Of course these chisels already have perfect shape and blade from the wise ancestors and worship them
so no need request to these chisels but actually the Japanese guy who lives in the far-off country have a hard time for carving in there
Because that country sculpture mainly used hard wood
so he cannnot found soft wood like a japanese woods
I try to think what is best way for carving from these hard wood
and I think the best way is he have to get special chisels made off hard steel edge and pour thick soft steel over the edge
If use soft steel it becomes comfortable to sharpen by softening it.
If made off harden steel only it becomes hard to sharpen
I always think Japanese edged tools use stak hard steel and soft steel is
really great idea
that make it sharp practically and easy to sharpen edge
and beautiful blade
I think this element to be beautiful is very importnt elements for raise motivation of sculpture
I introduced my best brand name of chisels bellow
This chisels used more than 15 years
so blade goes very short but still have beautiful form
This brand chisels is made thinly so it makes light and easy to use
